McCain’s Response

Posted in political by indiegoddess on October 12, 2008

I cannot give credit to John McCain for his belated backpeddle in the face of the response of his supporters.

While he attempts to place himself above the negativity of his campaign, his surrogates, including Sarah Palin, continue with the same old tactics.

One reason, one jarring and particular reason, that I find nothing impressive about McCain’s assertion that Obama is “not an Arab” but is in fact, “a decent family man with whom [he] happens to disagree with on fundamental issues” [paraphrase] is the obvious implication that Arabs are NOT decent family people. It’s the same with the weak assertions that Obama is not, in fact, Muslim. As if if he were, this would be some damnable offense.

According to the US 2000 census, over 281 million people of Arab descent and ancestry live in the United States. That was eight years ago, and seeing as the number grew by 32.7 million between 1990 and 2000, we have no reason to believe there hasn’t been an impressive jump in the last eight years as well.

Islam101 states that “most accept the estimate of [the Muslim population in the U.S.] from 5 million to 8 million.”

I can’t help but think about the millions upon millions upon hundreds of millions of people who have been dealing with unfair, dangerous hatred against them simply because of the colour of their skin or the way that they practice their religion, every single day since September 11th, 2001. And of course, before then as well. And now this rampant hatred is being drummed up again.

And the response we get, when Obama is “accused” of being an Arab, is that “no, no, he’s a decent family man.” As if the two were mutually exclusive.

This is nothing more than racism and xenophobia unleashed. Shame, shame, shame.
